Reasons to visit

Schladming, a beautiful Austrian town with world class skiing that lies amidst the stunning Dachstein mountain region in the province of Styria, is one of Austria's top 5 ski resorts. Located in the largest Ski Region in Austria known as the Amade Ski Region, with its 860km of pistes on the same lift pass, the skiing in Schladming forms the major part of ‘Schladming-Dachstein Amade' that comprises 175km of local skiing serviced by 81 lifts.

The large bustling town itself with a long skiing tradition dates back to medieval times and lies at 800m above sea level. At the heart of Schladming is the old ‘Hauptplatz', which is the tree-lined pedestrian square where pretty café's après ski bars and plenty of shopping can be found. The main gondola ski lift, (the new ‘Planai Stadium'), and the indoor and outdoor swimming pool complex are also just a couple of minutes' walk from the Hauptplatz.

With 4 beautiful interlinked mountains offering 124km of skiing to 2015m via 56 lifts, the skiing here is excellent providing charm and character which is supplied by the many welcoming, traditional mountain huts and cafes. Offering some of the best prepared pistes in the whole of Austria, Schladming at the foot of the Planai mountain has an excellent snow record (in addition 99% slopes covered with snow cannons) and also has the additional advantage of skiing on the nearby Dachstein glacier at 3,000 metres, considered one of the best free ride areas in Austria.

The area offers superb diverse skiing from pretty tree lined runs to the challenging downhill of the Annual Men’s World Cup Night Slalom race every January. After the Men’s slalom race in Kitzbuhel, this is the largest Alpine spectacle in the world attracting upwards of 50,000 spectators to Schladming. Recently announced, it will also be host of the 2013 Winter World Championships and as a result, is seeing an enormous amount of investment in the local infrastructure as well as investment in additional pistes and lifts. In return, the property market is very buoyant with prices rising steadily year on year and are expected to continue to grow as we approach 2013 and beyond.

In addition to the excellent and varied skiing on offer in the Schladming area there are also many other winter activities such as cross country skiing (150km), ski touring (‘back country skiing’), winter paragliding, snow-shoe walking, tobogganing and sleigh rides. Non skiers are well catered for with an excellent pool, skating rink and easy access to Salzburg and Radstart.

Although the busiest season for Schladming is in the winter, it is also an extremely pleasant and popular location for visitors in summer with many miles of hiking trails suitable for all degrees of fitness level. It has a delightful, friendly, ambience and many summer activities on offer. These include the world class 18 hole golf course, designed by Bernhard Langer, just 5 minutes along the valley in the village of Haus. There is also another top class 18 hole course just 15 minutes away in Radstadt.
