Get to know the resort
The charming, traditional all year round resort of Villars, at 1300m with 220km of piste and 77 lifts, in the heart of the Vaud Alps, is perfectly located on a sunny south facing plateau. World renowned as a family destination and underrated for its challenging terrain, the stunning views of the Rhone Valley, Dents du Midi, Mont Blanc Massif and Lake Geneva, combine with the tree-lined magical pistes dotted with chalets that lead right into the village.
With a very modern, very efficient lift system that is nearly all new thanks to the investment over the last 5 years, the ski domain of Villars includes the three areas of Villars/Bretaye, Gryon and Les Diablerets, via the new improved link at Le Meilleret. Bretaye at 1800m is serviced by aCog train from the main street in Villars, while the newly replaced, quicker high speed Roc d'Orsay Gondola runs at the other end of town. Four snow-parks, 44 km of cross-country skiing trails, sledging runs, numerous winter walks, bowling alley, sports centre, ice rink and swimming pool, coupled with a lively après-ski scene ensure there's plenty to keep you busy. The new Royal Alp 5 star Hotel and Spa is just one of the many new additions to the resort as investment now turns to the many shops and restaurants at the centre of the town.
Having an international ambiance thanks to the several very exclusive private schools, Villars is very much a genuine 4 season mountain resort. It has been and remains extremely popular with second home owners and those who have retired. In addition to its year round appeal, excellent shops and delightful restaurants serving top class food, Villars proximity to Geneva airport (90 minutes) and the ease of getting to Lake Geneva at Montreux only 25 minutes away, make it an excellent choice to invest. In the summer months, the many activities for those second home owners include hiking (300km of signposted footpaths), mountain biking (150km) and the beautiful scenic 18 hole golf course at 1600m with stunning views of Mont Blanc.
Just below Villars also sits the very beautiful, dual season resort of Gryon with its authentic and unique Swiss character. At 1180m and one of the oldest village in Switzerland, built on a precipice overhanging the Valley of the Avancon River, the totally unspoilt village comprising buildings only in traditional wooden style, synonymous with the area thanks to strict building controls, Gryon with many ski in and out properties, sits stretched out on the sunny slopes of Mont Jorogne and accesses the Villars network via the Les Chaux Gondola. With its iconic clock tower in the centre of the village, the ancient facades and tiny narrow lanes, there is a good mix of restaurants, shops, cafes, sport shops and ski school to keep you occupied and Villars is just 3 – 4 minutes drive by car.
In addition to Villars and Gryon, Barboleuse, nestles nicely between both resorts and offers many opportunities for ski in and out chalets and apartment investments, particularly in the Les Frasses area. The resort has a selection of restaurants, a supermarket, tea rooms and ski rental shop. The Barboleuse Gondola, with ample free parking provides the access to the Villars network, while Gryon is just 5 minutes and Villars 10 minutes by car, for a wide selection of other venues.
Being multi season resorts, if you are looking to rent your chalet or apartment to cover some of the costs, there are great opportunities throughout the winter and summer periods particularly during the Christmas/New Year weeks, the 4 weeks of February and the months of July and August, when rental returns are at a premium. Alpine Property Investments have a wide selection of chalets and apartments available in the resorts of Villars, Gryon and Barboleuse.
Villars, Gryon and Barboleuse are easy to get to. They can be reached by plane via Geneva, from all the main UK and regional airports, while during the winter, Sion can be reached direct from the London airports by a number of specialist charter flights, giving passengers a 45 minute drive up into the resort. For those wanting to take the train, a service operates from Geneva to Aigle (bus / taxis to the resort) or to Bex, where there is also a narrow-gauge railway which winds its way in tight curves through Gryon into Villars. Approximate transfer time 1 hour 45 mins from Geneva. By road the resorts are easy to reach, just 90 minutes from Geneva.
