This thriving, pretty little Savoyard village with its typically rustic chalets and farmhouses, bustling with life all year round is perfectly located in the heart of the Vallee d'Aulps at an altitude of 950m. One of the most historic villages in the area thanks to its 13th century Abbey, the village is known to date back in time, well before its close neighbour Morzine was born. With the river Dranse running through the centre, the village is split into two distinct areas only a couple of minutes walk between them. The East side is host to the main facilities of the village, while the West side has the old square and both have their own church.
Very much a family resort in the Portes du Soleil ski area, the West side of St Jean d'Aulps also offers skiers the self contained resort of La Grande Terche with skiing to 1800m. Simply one of the best places in the Portes du Soleil to beat the crowds in peak season the resort happily offers its own selection of bars, restaurants, shops and ski school. Home to 40km of piste, made up of 20 slopes (4 green, 5 blue, 10 red & 1 black), 14 ski lifts there is a free ski buses running all season from the village to the ski resort. With superb views of Lake Geneva, Dents du Midi and Mont Blanc, the resort is great for intermediate skiers and snowboarders while the off piste terrain is more than enough to keep advanced skiers occupied.
Thanks to its proximity to Morzine just 5km away by car or ski shuttle (1Euro each way), St Jean d'Aulps is a popular holiday home location for those also wanting to explore the world famous, huge 650km Portes du Soleil ski domain comprising 12 resorts and spanning two countries. Other local activities include kindergarten skiing from 3 years of age, snow shoe treks, cross country and telemark skiing, slalom and timed tests, torchlit descents, sledging, paragliding, cinema, under ice diving and hot air ballooning.
In summer, locally there are over 200km of sign posted footpaths exploring the Vallee d’Aulps and offering the chance to discover the different villages, lakes mountain tops and forests. Heading to Morzine, the extensive network of slopes, become 850 miles of unrestricted, sign-posted footpaths for hiking and colour coded tracks to match ski slope degree of difficulty for mountain biking. Over the years the Portes du Soleil has become renowned as the prime place for mountain bikers from the world over, with 25 lifts available to carry bikes throughout the summer. Other summer activities in the area include an 18 hole, 5264m, par 70 refurbished golf course with stunning views, swimming lakes complete with a beach and water toboggan, tennis courts, climbing, white water rafting, canyoning, abseiling, adventure park, horse riding, caving, paragliding, microlight’s, mini golf, paintball, quad bikes, fishing, library and hot air ballooning all on offer.
Being a dual resort, if you are looking to rent your chalet or apartment to cover some of the costs, the resort offers great potential throughout the winter and summer periods thanks to its local ski domain and access to the larger Portes du Soleil. Christmas/New Year, the 4 weeks of February and July / August in particular are extremely popular and generate the highest rental returns.
With just 70km to Geneva airport (75 mins), the short transfer times from the airport make owning a property in St Jean d’Aulps an ideal location. For those wishing to drive, the resort is easy to reach and is just 600 km from Paris, 800 km from Lille, 200 km from Lyon, 996 km from London, 848 km from Bruxelles and 1042 km from Amsterdam.
