Flaine, Haute Savoie, Rhone Alps
Flaine, the high altitude modern resort located at 1600m, in the Haute Savoie region of the French Alps, close to Geneva and Mont Blanc with excellent facilities for children and one of the best snow records in the French Alps, offers a scenic setting and magnificent views. A compact, convenient and purpose built mainly car free resort it is split principally on two levels that lie in a vast, open snow bowl. Both levels with their own shopping arcades and range of shops, supermarkets, ski lifts, restaurants and infrastructure, Flaine Forum (lower) is the traffic free centre that links easily with Flaine Foret (up the hillside) by two funiculars running night and day. A free daily shuttle runs all day between the resort centre and Hameau de Flaine located at 1800m.
Providing some of the best skiing in France, Flaine is one of the resorts that make up the stunning 265km Grand Massif ski domain that also includes the resorts of Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoens and Sixt. Ranging in altitude from 700 – 2480m the ski domain comprising 141 runs suitable for beginners to expert and serviced by 77 lifts, the natural snowfall allows for long seasons (mid Dec – mid/end April) as well as excellent ski conditions throughout the season. With 218 snow cannons guaranteeing good quality snow on the more delicate parts of the domain, locally Flaine offers its own 140km ski area ranging from 1600 – 2480m serviced by 27 lifts.
A perfect second home destination for children there is a crèche from 6 months to 3 years while the two ski schools the resort offers teaches children from the age of 3 to 12 years. Those under 5 have use of the ski lifts free. For beginners the resort is also a little gem. Four lifts are free allowing you to practice on the quieter, wide and gentle nursery slopes. Intermediate skiing is simply first class and for experts there are endless off piste trails to explore as well as extremely challenging blacks. The Grand Massif is a huge winter playground for boarders with great spots for free riding and off piste riding. The snow park with modules of difficulty (tables, quarters, rails) is free to all snow boarders with a full ski pass.
For those not wanting to ski, the Nordic area situated at 1844m and serviced by the free ski bus is one of the highest cross country areas in Europe. 13km of marked Cross Country tracks with breath taking views and fresh alpine air combine with 6.5km of pedestrian and snow shoe paths. In addition the resort has plenty to keep owners entertained including concerts, activities, fun and games. The indoor pool, skating rink, fitness centre, dogsledding, skidoo and Quad driving, paragliding, ice diving, luge (sledding) and bowling alley make up a few of the things on offer. While there is also a good selection of restaurants and bars for families as well as a nightclub open till 5am for those looking for Apres ski and want to party the night away.
Flaine is also for the summer with several free activities. As well as the 150km of signposted hiking trails and 105km of of mountain bike tracks to 2480m, owners can try tennis, archery, inflatable castle, badminton, beach volleyball, basketball, table tennis, adult/children work groups (cooking…), tournaments, petanque, fitness classes with instructor and the new Big Air Bag. In addition there are assorted water sports locally that include fishing in Flaine’s lake, as well as canyoning, hydrospeed and rafting. For the golfer there is the18 hole, par 63, Flaine-Les Carroz course with spectacular views, at an altitude of 1900m making it one of the highest in Europe. The summer concerts of classical music offered during August, just adds to the diversity Flaine has on offer.
One of the most easily accessible resorts to reach in the French Alps, Flaine is the ideal location for a second home. With Geneva airport just 70km (1 hour 15 minutes) and only 30km (Jn. 19 Cluses) from the A40 motorway, regular shuttle and bus services operate between Geneva and Flaine during the winter season for those who don’t wish to drive. By rail the closest station is Cluses where regular shuttle bus and taxi services are available.
