Why we love the Alps

Those who have ever skied or spent any length of time in the luxurious mountain expanse of the French or Swiss Alps will know that there is a lot to love about this beautiful part of the world.

When you think of the Alps, your mind conjures up images of people skiing down a white blanket of snow on mountain terrain. However, if you're a lover of the great outdoors, there are many other year-round activities that you can get involved in.

Fans of adrenaline sports will get the chance to indulge their inner daredevil by participating in some white-water rafting in the French resort of Meribel. Half day sessions start from 55 euros for adults and 42 euros for children.

Visitors to Meribel or Courchevel can access an aerial view of the Alps by taking speed riding lessons; here you will receive excellent and patient tuition when being introduced to this fun sport. Prices start at 250 euros per person.

During the summer months, much of the French and Swiss Alps provide plenty of sunshine and breath-taking mountainous views for those that enjoy walking and rock climbing.

The Alps are also home to many fine dining establishments, those that appreciate good food and restaurant ambience should check out the Nomad Sushi lounge in the Swiss Alpine resort of Verbier. Here you will find the famous Nomand Sushi, in addition to the new Sumibiyaki grill. Hand-picked DJs and a host of flowing cocktails should ensure your night at Nomad is one to remember!

For those that love a bit of retail therapy, the Alps are home to a variety of markets, boutique shops and sportswear havens. Individuals that enjoy relaxation and pampering will feel right at home in the Alps, with both the French and Swiss Alps offering an abundant selection of spas that overlook the mountains. Whether you're enjoying a relaxing massage in the warm while it snows outside in the winter, or sipping champagne on a sun-filled terrace while soaking up the views in the summer, the Alps are the perfect relaxation haven.
