Summer skiing in France?

It might come as a surprise to hear that you can ski all year round in France, but with one of the highest skiing areas in the world, Les Deux Alpes is actually the capital of summer skiing.

So if you’re looking for property for sale in France, the year-round aspect of Europe’s largest skiable glacier could turn your idyllic chalet or apartment into a whole year investment that just keeps giving.

At 90 hectares, the glacier at Les Deux Alpes sits between 2800 m and 3600 m above sea level. It has an 800 m vertical descent, 16 ski lifts open throughout the morning and a purpose-built snow park with half-pipes and courses for the snowboarders. It opens for skiing in June, too, when most of the world is heading to the beach. So for hardened skiers, the area that overlooks the resorts of Meribel and Courcheval is the only place to go in the summer months.

The duality of the holiday often appeals as the skiing takes place in the morning and then the adrenaline junkies can head down off the glacier and enjoy the summer sun a little further down the mountain. Mountain biking, kayaking, and even paragliding all offer alternative activities for the afternoon and then there is the traditional Alpine hospitality and cuisine in the evenings.

Of course, not everybody goes up on the glacier. Many of the tourists come to enjoy the mountains at their warmest and hiking, horse riding and more are all popular reasons to come to the region. A number of new adventure sports, including canyoning, are bringing a new breed too.

Meribel also comes with its own unique charm. It is renowned for its village atmosphere as well as the forests that surround it. In the winter, it links with Courcheval and La Tania to create one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. In the summer, it's a different world as the snow melts.

This ensures a steady stream of tourists throughout the summer months and there is no such thing as an off-season in this exclusive region of the Alps. Of all the apartments for sale in the French Alps, those in Meribel and Courcheval offer the greatest potential for year-round returns.
